The Formula for Budgeting Success

Most budgets don’t fail because of math. They fail because they start in the wrong place.
It’s just like life. Think about changes you’ve tried in the past. Exercising more, eating healthier, spending more time learning. We focus on the destination but frequently lack a map.
You can go to the gym but, unless you know how to use the equipment, you probably won’t have much success. You can fill a shopping cart full of healthful foods but, unless you know mouthwatering ways to prepare them, you probably won’t stick with it.
The same with budgeting and finance. We’re bombarded with temptations to purchase, easy payment options, automatic deductions from our bank accounts for discounts . . . the siren call urging us to spend, spend, spend is all around us.
I’ve been sharing practical ideas to help you take control of your money. This isn't just about jotting down numbers and tracking them. By understanding how your brain works, you can build a budget that’s easy, sustainable and real.
For years, people have shared their financial struggles with me. The desire to do better was there. The formula wasn’t.
Here’s the formula:
Why You Buy + What You Need = How You Budget
“Budget” is last, not first. We’re encouraged to jump right into the “how” but unless we can identify why we buy and what we need, how we budget can fall apart.
Once we know WHY we’re buying – namely that we’re human and that dopamine hit feels flippin’ fantastic! - we can figure out WHAT we really need. That combo will be the ticket to creating and sticking to what we at Budget YOU! call a Money Map. Once you have a map and the reasoning for it, spending decisions become easier. You know where you’re trying to go.
Let’s blow up a misconception that budgeting means restriction. Actually, it’s the opposite. You’re not restricted if you use a map before heading out on a road trip. Instead, you have peace of mind knowing that you’re going to reach your destination with a minimum of roadblocks, headaches and stress.
That’s exactly what your Money Map is . . . not a restriction but a route.
When you know WHY you buy and WHAT you need, HOW you budget doesn’t feel like punishment. It feels like freedom.
I want YOU to be the boss of your bucks!
