"Budget" is NOT a four-letter word

Growing up, you could get your mouth washed out with soap if certain words slipped out . . . especially around grandma.

Times have changed and many of those words are now used fairly commonly. For good or bad.

But there is one word that never got your mouth all bubbly and yet people still treat like it does: BUDGET.

Say that word at Thanksgiving dinner and see what kind of reaction you get. Mention it to your colleagues in the break room and watch them run for cover.

Heck, we don't even like to think that word. Our brain starts spinning, our tummies turn sour and our heart rate soars.

How did that happen? It's just a word, right?

Somewhere along the way, the word "budget" got dragged onto the naughty list without ever earning it. Many people think having one means you have a spending problem. A sign of failure.

Others see a budget as restrictive, kind of like a diet. You have to ditch the good stuff forever. That's no way to live life.

At Budget YOU!, we see budgets completely differently.

A budget is simply a tool that guides you toward your goals and financial freedom. A tool, not a trap.

That's it. Not scary at all.

In fact, at Budget YOU! we call your budget a Money Map. We help you map out the life you want — one that aligns with your personal values and ambitions. A map doesn't judge you. It simply shows you the way.

The First Step

We'll dig more deeply into the Money Map in future posts, including the formula that ties it all together: WHY you buy + WHAT you need = HOW you budget. More on that soon.

For now, I encourage you to get started on your own. There are solid apps and spreadsheet templates online, including free ones offered by many banks and credit unions.

Setting up a budget may take about 30 minutes and you're absolutely worth that time!

Promise.

Grab your bank statement and start plugging in the numbers you know. Don't stress about the gaps, fill in what you know and leave the rest for later. Some of these numbers may surprise you and that's perfectly OK. Knowing them is the whole point. They tell you what might need to shift and what's already working.

Just Take the Step

Taking that first step may sound daunting but it's really not. It's just a step. And you've taken plenty of those over the years, haven't you?

Open up that bank statement. Don't judge yourself based on past spending, the balance in your account or anything else. Those are just numbers and numbers can be changed.

You are taking control of your finances. You are taking control of your life.

That's not something to judge. That's something to be proud of.

Taking action – including removing "budget" from the naughty word list and adding it to your everyday vocabulary — leads to a completely different mindset.

You'll soon discover that you have more control than you think. More than you ever thought possible.

YOU will be the boss of your bucks.
